Pair of Matthew Boulton Antique Sheffield Plate Candelabra, c. 1800

Pair of Matthew Boulton Antique Sheffield Plate Candelabra, c. 1800

These elegant candelabra were made by the important Birmingham maker Matthew Boulton.  The plain, classic shape is decorated with gadrooning around the bases, shoulders, drip pans and original bobeches.  Candlestick version of the Pair of Matthew Boulton Antique Sheffield Plate Candelabra, c. 1800This decoration compliments the swirling arms.  Although technically 2-light candelabra, the middle flame finials are removable and can be used as 3-light candelabra.  The removable flame finials are used as candle snuffers.  The candelabra branches are removable for use as a pair of candlesticks.  These were made before the invention of the silver insert meant for engravings, or before c. 1805.  They are very similar to a set of 4 Matthew Boulton candle sticks we have and would make a stunning suite together.

These lovely antique Sheffield plate candelabra are marked with Boulton’s famous double sunburst mark around the bases and also underneath the branch section.  Never monogrammed or crested, they measure 19 inches high by 15 inches across the arms and are in very good antique condition with very minor rosing.
