Extremely Rare Georg Jensen Sterling Vase, c. 1920

Rare Georg Jensen Sterling Vase, c. 1920

An exceptional and rare Jensen piece, this vase has very strong architectural design elements.  It is formed of three flaring layers, with geometric vertical lines and cast and applied balls around the tops of the two lower layers.  The top rim is decorated with a cast and applied molded rim; the pedestal foot is wonderfully designed with circular elements and a lobed ring on the outer edge.

We have never seen this model before, and cannot find it in any references.  It has a bold modernist design with strong vertical movement.  Because the look is more streamlined and less organic, we are attributing the design to Johan Rohde.   Rohde also liked using beads and lobed rings.  Along with Jensen, Rohde was the other great early designer at the firm.  His achievements include designing the ‘Acorn’ pattern.

This stunning vase is marked underneath the foot ‘GEORG JENSEN’ in a beaded oval.  According to Erik Lassen in Georg Jensen Silversmithy: 77 Artists, 75 Years, the Jensen shop claims this rare mark was used from 1915-27.  It is also marked ‘925.S/ DENMARK/ STERLING/ 564’.  A previous owner has engraved their social security number underneath the base.  It measures 10 inches tall by 6.25 wide at the top.  It weighs a hefty 35.20 troy ounces and is in very good condition with a couple very small dings and surface scratches.
