‘Hamburg’ is a very rare and unusual pattern. I’m not sure if one can use ‘bizarre’ as a technical term. It incorporates the popular hammered and medallion styles in a whole new direction and level. The bold twist handle with a notched edge terminates with an irregular reserve with a very animated dog. The blade, with shaped edge, has a diagonal line of stamped pinwheels and all around the blade are more irregular reserves with devices: three of birds, a crab, frog and cherry blossom.
In private conversations, Sam Hough has indicated this very rare pattern is cast, not die stamped as are most 19th century flatware pieces. This is a complicated and very expensive way to make flatware and it is easy to see why Gorham would have made so little.
This wonderful sterling silver pie server is marked on the back ‘C/ STERLING’. This is a very rare mark used by Gorham on Hamburg and occasionally on Hizen. It measures 8.75 inches long, weighs 3.20 troy ounces, has never been monogrammed and is in excellent antique condition.
