John Polhemus 'Armor' Pattern Coin Silver Twist Handle Master Butter Knife, New York, 1862

A wonderful and useful piece, this coin silver lovely butter knife was made in the rare Armor pattern which features renaissance style strap work and a trefoil at the end of the handle.  It is engraved on the handle 'M.W.A. / Dec. 1862.' In a cursive style.

One of New York's leading mid 19th century silversmiths, John Polhemus as one of the select silversmith whose work Tiffany sold before they made their own silver.  This piece was sold by William D. Briggs, a retailer whose New York location at 56 Stanton St. was working from 1839-76.

This rare coin silver server marked on the blade 'J.P. Patent 1860' and with a star, the other side is marked 'Wm. D. Briggs'.  It measures 8.875 inches long and is in very good antique condition with light wear to the highlights.
