Bold shell decoration with acanthus leaves is featured on the shaped gadrooned border of the wonderful venison size oval meat platter - classical and elegant.
Richard Morton was one of the original Sheffield smiths, working in both silver and fused plate in the 1780's. His firm continued for many years (in fact he took out a
patent for the telescoping candlestick in the early 1800's) and this platter dates to the 1810's or 20's.
A lovely piece of Antique Sheffield fused silver plate, it has stamped and applied decoration around the edge. One side bears crest of a lion's head in a silver blank
so the engraving would not go through to the copper. This technology was developed around 1805 in part because of the increased popularity of this style of
silver plate amongst landed families who wanted to engrave their crest and coats of arms on their silver.
This exceptional example of Antique Sheffield plate is marked on the back with Morton's trademark. It measures 23 inches long and 17.25 inches wide. It is
in excellent antique condition, retaining its original surface with scratches from use.
