English Regency Sterling Silver Meat Platter, Paul Storr, London, 1810/11
Bold shell decoration framed by acanthus leaves and anthemion leaves interspersed among a shaped gadrooned border: Paul Storr at his best. This wonderful oval meat
platter (technically venison size) is the largest size produced by Storr's shop and an outstanding example of his work - bold, classical and elegant.
Paul Storr was the greatest silversmith of his era. As the principal silversmith of Rundell, Bridge & Rundell (who served as royal jewelers and silversmiths to their majesties
George III, George IV and their extended families), Storr produced some of the most exciting, exquisite and expensive silver ever made.
This meat platter is engraved with two crests. Although we have been unable to identify the crests, they are displayed under a baron's coronet. However, this coronet is a continental
one, being used in France, Russia and Italy.
This exceptional piece of Regency silver is fully marked on the back and bears the stamped model number 507.
It measures 22.5 inches long and 17.5 inches wide. It weighs a very impressive 113.5 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition, retaining a possibly original
surface with scratches from use. We purchased this privately with an associated fitting mazarin (also by Storr), click here for more information on the mazarin. The two
have been together at least a couple generations.
