Gorham "Medallion' Pattern Coin Silver Coffee/ Tea Set, c. 1865
This 3-piece set consists of a coffee or tea pot, creamer and covered sugar. Numerous details and various techniques attest to the quality of the service. A total
of seven portrait medallions are applied around the boldly designed rims bordered with an applied die-rolled, Greek-key border. The areas underneath the borders depict finely chased ivy against shimmering, matte
backgrounds. Additional leaf-motif chasing decorate the pedestal bases.
Wonderful female masks are applied on the handles and the pouring spout has a stunning depiction of a man with cattail headdress (these could possibly symbolize
gods and goddesses of agriculture). Sitting atop the coffee pot and sugar lid are fully cast winged cherubs.
Engraved on each piece is a lovely script 'MEH' monogram. All of these romantic motifs work beautifully with the shapes and classicism of the pieces.
This stunning coin silver coffee/ tea set is marked underneath with Gorham's trademark and the model '390' and the coffee/tea and sugar bowl are also stamped 'T&Co'. The
coffee/tea pot measures 10 inches high by 9.5 inches across the handle and spout. The combined weight is 71.25 troy ounces and they are in excellent antique condition.
