Kalo Shops Arts & Crafts Hand Wrought Sterling Silver Creamer and Sugar, Chicago, 1914-18
With bold angular shapes, this lovely creamer and sugar demonstrate the forward looking nature of Chicago designs.
The angular bodies, handles and spout all complement each other. The confidence of the design is clear in the hammered surface – bold, but not too large hammering;
irregular but appropriately sized to create a patterned look. The half round drawn thread applied to the rim of both pieces contrasts with the hammering and continues the half
round edge of the handles, giving a pleasing finished look to the pieces.
The Kalo Shops made fine silver and was the most commercially successful of Chicago's arts and crafts
silversmithing firms, being in business from 1900 until 1970. With such a long period of production it is nice to be able to
document these as early pieces through the marks: Kalo had a shop in New York only from 1914 to 18.
These beautiful sterling silver pieces are marked 'STERLING/ HAND WROUGHT/ AT/ THE KALO SHOPS/ CHIGAGO/ AND NEW YORK/ 1'. They measure just over
2 inches high and 4.25 inches across the handles (spout). Weighing 8.4 troy ounces, they are in excellent condition and have never been engraved or monogrammed.
