Comprising a coffee pot, tea pot, covered sugar bowl and creamer, this boldly executed tea and coffee service is based on Scandinavian modern designs, the 'blossom'
or magnolia' pattern. Yet it is also different.
More vigorously hammered and with larger bodies than a similar Jensen service, this service is distinctive and would feel very happy on a mid-century biomorphic coffee table.
Although technically working across the river in New Jersey, William G. deMatteo is considered (along with Peer Smed) to have been New York's finest mid-century
silversmith. His hand wrought silver is always of fine quality. Another of his great achievements was training his son, William L deMatteo, as a silversmith. William L
. deMatteo became the first master silversmith at Colonial Williamsburg.
It is marked underneath 'HAND MADE', 'STERLING', and with deMatteo's wheel trademark. The coffee pot measures 8.5 inches high by 9 inches across the handle
and the service weighs a combined 67.2 troy ounces (handles included). It is in excellent antique condition with a few age cracks in the ivory handles.
