English Sterling Jug by Peter & Ann Bateman, London, c.1796/97
English Sterling Jug by Peter & Ann Bateman, London, c.1796/97

This elegant jug is a wonderful example of silver produced by Peter and his sister-in law Ann Bateman.  The classical urn-form body with a stepped circular pedestal base is embellished with a hand-engraved shield on the front.  Spreading from the top of this shield around both sides of the pot are beautifully hand-engraved floral garlands which attach to paterae and ribbons. This wonderful piece shows the strong influence of classical architect Robert Adam.

This lovely covered pitcher is marked on the lid with the makers mark and lion passant.  The body is fully hallmarked underneath the rim (maker’s mark rubbed).  Measuring 12.5 inches high, it weighs 22.90 troy ounces, has never been monogrammed or engraved and is in very good antique condition. There is slight uneveness around the base near the edge where it was straightened.
