A rare and early example of Tiffany & Co silver, this stunning piece is part of a line of tea wares referred to in Tiffany Silver by Charles Carpenter as ‘Ivy Chased’ (see pp. 61-64).  On a stippled background, swirling repousse vines with large ivy leaves and clusters of berries flow around the body, handle, lid and base.  Elaborate masks adorn the handles and spout.  The circular base, with superbly cast scrolling foliate arms with ivory handles, rests upon four cast and applied classical scroll feet. 

This stunning hot water kettle on stand is marked underneath the kettle ‘TIFFANY & CO./ ENGLISH STERLING/ 925 – 1000/550 BROADWAY/ 1184/7972’ along with the old English ‘m’ signifying it being made by John Chandler Moore as exclusive silversmith to Tiffany.  According to Charles Carpenter in Tiffany Silver, the 1184 pattern number would date this piece to 1860-64.  It measures 15.25 inches to the top of the handle and weighs 88.95 troy ounces.  It is in very good antique condition with light wear to the highlights.

It is interesting to note this example is both earlier and more elaborate than the example Carpenter discusses in the book.  The Carpenter service belonged to him and sold as lot number 12 in his collection at Christie’s Jan. 21, 1994 for $19,220.00.
