Durgin Sterling Aesthetic Movement Pie Server, c. 1870’s
This lovely pie server is very unusual in its design. The blade has an exotic hand-engraved scene of an exotic bird (a stork or egret perhaps) with a tree trunk to its right and other foliage under a sky with sun and clouds. The handle has irregular, horizontal hammering which shimmers to give the impression of water as if the bird is standing by a stream or lake. It is monogrammed on the back of the handle ‘A.K.C.’
This beautiful server is marked on the back with Durgin’s bird in a wreath trademark, ‘STERLING’ and by the Boston firm of ‘Crosby & Foss’. It measures 9.5 inches long, weighs 2.30 troy ounces and is in good condition with some surface wear from use.
