William Adams Coin Silver Child's Cup, c. 1841
A rare and wonderful example of William Adams silver from New York is represented in this beautiful cup with tulip-shaped body and pedestal base. Die-rolled banding acts as
decoration and reinforcement to the top rim and bottom edge of the foot. Attached at the side is a lovely 'S'-scroll handle with thumb piece. The front is engraved 'ELP' in beautiful script.
William Adams was a very important silversmith. His famous works include the 1841 mace of the United States House of Representatives and the Henry Clay presentation urn. In Elegant Plate – Three Centuries of Precious Metals in New York by Deborah Waters, an identical cup with a
slightly different handle that was used as a prize by the American Institute at their 1841 fair is discussed (pp. 263-4).
This wonderful silver cup is marked underneath 'W. ADAMS' and 'NEW YORK' in serrated rectangles. It measures 4.5 inches high to the top of the handle, weighs 3
.85 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
