Text of report for the EM92 Candlesticks by Samuel Hough, derived from Gorham’s Costing Records in the Gorham Archives:
The Gorham EM92 Candlesticks
The costing card for the EM92 Candlesticks, designed by Erik Magnussen, is dated 2 March 1928. Two were made. Each candlestick weighed 2.05 troy oz. of sterling silver valued at $1.54.
Some of the silver was spun briefly. 9 minutes, and turned for 45 minutes. Some of the silver was cast; this, too, was a 45-minute job. The prepared silver then went to a silversmith, who fashioned the candlestick in two hours and 57 minutes (why didn't they round it to three hours?).
It was then chased, for 21 minutes and filed for 42 minutes. The next step seems to be "chucks", a process I’ve not encountered before and cannot describe; it took 24 minutes. Bobbing added 18 minutes.
Direct and indirect labor costs came to $8.50. With $1.54 for silver the sum was $10.04. Here were added $3.01 (30%) overhead and $3.26 (25%) profit for a total of $16.31. These were set to sell for $36, and $60 for the pair.
