English Sterling ‘Hour Glass’ Pattern Grape Shears by William Eley & William Fearn, London, c. 1816/17
This rare pair of solid sterling silver grape shears is in the ‘Hour Glass’ pattern. In the form of a pair of scissors, these rare servers were placed on a table for cutting bunches of grapes for eating. Due to their fragile form, many have not survived the test of time and these are a very uncommon period example of the form. This lovely pair is engraved with a bird crest.
The hourglass pattern first became popular in the early 19th century at the same time as the classic King and Queen patterns, but it is rarer. It is very similar to them although it features an hourglass rather than anthemion leaves. Eley and Fearn were some of the finest flatware makers of their era and these shears are typical of their quality.
These wonderful shears are fully hallmarked. They measure 6.75 inches long, weigh 3.15 troy ounces and are in very good condition with some wear to the pattern. The antique iron screw is a period replacement.
