Gorham 'Bird's Nest' Sterling Cracker Scoop or Nut Spoon
Gorham 'Bird's Nest' Sterling Cracker Scoop or Nut Spoon

An exceptional pattern in a very uncommon form, we are happy to be able to offer this stunning server and a pierced server in the very rare 'Bird's Nest' pattern.  These 2 pieces of 'Bird's Nest' are the nicest examples we've seen in this pattern and give testimony to the greatness of Gorham's original designers and skilled craftsman.  While this shape is similar to oyster stew cracker scoops, it may be the 'nut spoon' listed in Gorham's costing records weighing 3 ounces (as noted in Diana Cramer's Silver Magazine article "Bird's Nest by Gorham" in the May/June 1990 issue).
nest detail of Gorham 'Bird's Nest' Sterling Cracker Scoop or Nut Spoon

This pattern is the rarest and most unique of the naturalistic designs and was introduced c. 1865.  It is comprised of multiple castings which were later hand-finished for detail  and assembled into the various serving pieces.  The handle is in the form of a branch which braches out into 3 branches which holds the bird's nest.  The base of the handle has 2 large leaves which act as both decoration and support. At the other end of the handle are 3 leaves, the top most attached to the nest to give it support along with the 3 branches on the back.

The beautifully cast, 3-dimensional nest contains 3 gilded eggs.  (Gorham also made a less costly die-stamped nest, this is the full cast version.)  The fully cast bird with wings  spread is perched on the rim. The large bowl has a shaped side and retains its original gilding.  It is marked on the back with Gorham's trademark and 'STERLING'.  This incredible server measures 9.75 inches long, weighs 3 troy ounces and is in exceptional condition.
