Gorham 'Bird's Nest' Sterling Large Pierced Sifter

An exceptional pattern in an uncommon form, we are happy to be able to offer this stunning server and a Cracker Scoop in the very rare 'Bird's Nest' pattern.  These 2 pieces of 'Bird's Nest' are the nicest examples we've seen in this pattern and give testimony to the greatness of Gorham's original designers and skilled craftsman.  For more  information on Bird's Nest see Diana Cramer's Silver Magaize article "Bird's Nest by Gorham" in the May/June 1990 issue.

This pattern is the rarest and most unique of the naturalistic designs and was introduced c.1865.  It is comprised of multiple castings which were later hand-finished for detail  and assembled into the various serving pieces.  The handle is in the form of a tree branch which branches out into 3 branches at the top which holds the bird's nest.  The base of  the handle has 2 large leaves which act as both decoration and support.  At the other end of the handle are 3 leaves, the top most attached to the nest to give it support along with the 3 branches on the back. 

The beautifully cast, 3-dimensional nest contains 3 gilded eggs. (Gorham also made a less costly die-stamped nest, this is the full cast version.) The fully cast bird with wings  spread is perched on the rim.  The large scalloped bowl is shaped with 5 flutes.  Within each of the flutes is hand-engraved bright-cut vine decoration with piercing as  leaves. It is marked on the back with Gorham's trademark and 'STERLING'.  This incredible server measures 9 inches long, weighs 2.55 troy ounces and is in excellent condition  with very light wear to the gilding in the bowl.
