Gorham Aesthetic Movement Sterling Soup Ladle, c. 1870’s
This is another example of what made Gorham such a great company. This sterling ladle is a rare design and constructed in multiple parts. Firstly, the bowl has a lovely shape and is hand-engraved along the inside rim. The part of the bowl where the handle is attached is fluted and in the shape of a heart with engraving of raspberry vines. Above the bowl is a ball and lozenge. The handle is a sterling rod which flattens and curves as to give it its shape. The surface of the handle was hand stipled to give the background a sparkling effect. Upon that surface is a wonderful 3-dimensional cast and applied raspberry vine with leaves and clusters of berries. At the tip is an added engraved leaf ornament. The back is marked with Gorhams' trademark, sterling and has a old English style capital 'D' monogram. This piece measures 10.75 inches long and the bowl measures just over 4 inches wide. This sterling ladle is in very good condition.
