Pair of George Sharp Ball-top Sterling Silver Sugar Spoons, c. 1870

In their original box, these lovely condiment spoons are fine examples of George Sharp's creative and idiosyncratic designs of the 1860's in the reform aesthetic.

Although simple in design, these lovely spoons are made of multiple cast parts joined together. The tops of the handles are a large silver ball engraved with an 'M' initial surmounted by a smaller ball. The shafts of the handles are hexagonal in form. The bowls with scalloped edges are decorated with classical engraving.  Cast elements join all the pieces together to form these lovely serving spoons.

George Sharp ran the silver shop at Philadelphia's great Bailey & Co. until he left in 1862 to start his own shop, where he produced some of the most creative flatware of the period.  Patented in 1863, this pattern represents one of his earliest solo designs.

These serving spoons are stamped 'G.S./ PATENT 1863/ STERLING'. They measures 6.5 inches long, weigh 1.0 troy ounce each and are in very good/excellent antique condition.

The velvet and silk lined box is stamped with the retailer 'CROSBY & MORSE/ 240 WASH ST/ BOSTON' and is not in good condition as the hinge has worn out.
