Gorham ‘Medallion’ Coin Silver Water Pitcher, 1861-67

Gorham ‘Medallion’ Coin Silver Water Pitcher, c. 1865

One of the nicest and most striking of the ‘Medallion’ holloware designs is this water pitcher with spherical body on a splayed, pedestal foot and elongated helmet-shaped spout. The plain surfaces accentuates the strong Handle detail of Gorham ‘Medallion’ Coin Silver Water Pitcher, c. 1865architectural design which features a boldly cast handle with terminating classical foliate elements and a medallion thumb-piece.  Defining the midsection of the pitcher is an applied horizontal band of vertical tapering line decoration.  Three neoclassical cameo medallions against a stippled background are applied along the band, one in the front and one on each side.  A wonderfully engraved ‘EGC’ monogram decorates the front above the medallion.

This lovely coin silver water pitcher is marked underneath with Gorham’s trademark and the model number ‘211’.  It is also marked by the important Philadelphia retailer ‘Bailey & Co’.    It measures 12 inches high, weighs 38.80 troy ounces and is in very good/ excellent antique condition except for a small nick underneath the rim of the foot where someone tested the silver content.
