Gorham 'Eglantine' Pattern Sterling Silver 'Montieth' Style Centerpiece Bowl, 1880
Gorham ‘Eglantine’ Pattern Sterling Silver ‘Montieth’ Style Centerpiece Bowl, 1880

Eight exceptional, boldly cast realistic roses are applied to an aesthetic band of rose branches and leaves which issue from an applied branch border.  Twenty unique designs of flowers decorate each of the scenes that compose the scalloped rim.  The base of this bowl is a splayed ring foot with incised lines. Both the base and the plain exterior surface of the bowl have a soft, satin finish which contrasts wonderfully with the decoration above.

The background of the rose decoration, along with the eight applied roses, is gilded. The highlights of the band are ungilded.  According to the Gorham CD's, 'Eglantine' could be ordered either in 'pure white' (ungilded), entirely oxidized or with a 'gold ground' as this piece appears to be.

'Eglantine' is a stunning pattern of dramatic roses set on a background of branches and leaves. Flatware in this pattern is uncommon and examples of holloware are very rare. Over the past 20 years, we have only had one piece of holloware in this pattern: a child's cup identical to the one pictured in the Gorham CD's

This exquisite sterling silver bowl is marked with Gorham's trademark and 'STERLING/ 1635/ M'. The 'M' was the year mark used in 1880.  It measures 8.5 inches in diameter by 4.25 inches high, weighs 25.30 troy ounces and is in very good/ excellent antique condition.
