H.A. Osgood Coin Silver Pie Server, Lewiston, Maine, c. 1860’s
Hand-engraved rococo revival foliate scrolls decorate both the blade and handle of this beautiful server. Small round and oval piercing is incorporated into the design of the blade which is also engraving and wheel-work along the border. The front of the handle is engraved with the name ‘Ada’.
Silver from Maine is very rare. Over the years we’ve had many pieces from Portland marked by Lowell & Senter which we beleive were not made in Maine, but retailed there. This is one of the very rare pieces that we have had which we are convinced was made in Maine.
This piece is both beautiful and engagingly provincial. Osgood is not well documented, only being referred to in the Fredyma’s A Directory of Maine Silversmiths and Watch and Clock Makers (Hanover, NH: Privately Printed, 1972). as c. 1875. This piece looks a little earlier than that to us. It is a remarkable acheivment for an individual at a time when the business was being overtaken by large manufacturers such as Gorham and Durgin that Osgood was making items such as this in Lewiston. It is very clearly marked.
This lovely server is marked ‘H.A.OSGOOD/ LEWISTON/ COIN’, measures 8.75 inches long, weighs 1.65 troy ounces and is in very good condition.
