This lovely item is a great example of repousse Baltimore silver. The oval-shaped body is decorated in stunning repousse depicting various foliate scenes
against a stippled background. This fluid, 3-dimensional design is executed between cast and applied edges which construct, strengthen and beautify the edges of the base and shaped upper rim.
Cast and applied loop handles are decorated with foliate motifs and applied at the ends. The interior of the basket is decorated with what is referred to as a
'snowflake' design around a vine cartouche with the initials 'MJHB'.
This identical form is represented twice in Silver in Maryland by Jennifer Goldsborough. One example is by S. Kirk & Son and the other is by AE Warner, both c.
1860. (see catalog entry 176 and 312, pages 150 and 215). This older example is about as early as this form was ever made.
This wonderful silver basket is marked underneath 'Saml. KIRK/ S.K/ 11.OZ' and also marked with the Baltimore assay marks for this period under one foot.
It measures 13.75 inches long by 7.75 inches wide by 4 inches high, weighs 25.15 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
