English Art Deco Sterling Silver Coffee Service on Tray, Charles Boyton, London, 1932/33, the tray 1935/36

English Art Deco Sterling Silver Coffee Service on Tray, Charles Boyton, London, 1932/33

Exceptional design and craftsmanship come together to create this work of art.  Bold geometric shapes define the service, which is one of the purest and finest of English art-deco designs.

Whereas the creamer is a perfect 2.5 inch cube with a spout and an attached handle on a square plinth base, the body of the nearly cubic sugar bowl (with its original glass liner and 2 handles on a square plinth) measures three inches long by three inches deep by 2.25 inches high.  This same cuboid design is strikingly displayed in the coffee and tea pot.

The hinged covers, which compliment the bases, are stepped squares surmounted with lacquered wood finials that match the bold handles.

Executed in an oblong octagonal shape, the tray is amazing with raised sides and stepped edge.  Lacquered handles mount silver shelves on the ends.  On the front of the tray is an engraved crest of a deer with antlers and the motto ‘BY DAND’ for Gordon.  The reverse is engraved:

The Boodles Club in London is one of the oldest “Gentlemen’s Clubs” of London known for it’s politically inclined membership.  Included in its list of members are such luminaries as Ian Fleming and Winston Churchill.   Sunningdale is a famous private golf course and club house outside London.

According to Burke’s Landed Gentry (1939 edition), the only Gordon who was a member of Boodles at the time was George Reginald Stanier Gordon of Wincombe Park, Shaftesbury, Dorset.

This stunning set is fully hallmarked and all pieces are signed ‘Charles Boyton’.  (The tray includes the rare George V Jubilee mark - see above.)

The coffee pot measures 8 inches high by 7 inches across handle and spout and the tea pot measures 5 inches high by 9.5 inches across handle and spout.  The tray measures 23 inches long by 10 inches deep.

Made from heavy gage silver, the coffee service weighs an impressive 60 troy ounces with the tray adding 56.40 troy ounces.  All pieces are in excellent condition with the tray exhibiting light surface scratches from normal use.
