This is a lovely coin silver serving spoon with an elongated, scalloped serving bowl. Rococo foliate design ornaments the handle around a 'B' initial. This pattern detail is repeated on the back of the handle.
Michael Gibney was a silversmith in New York City. Gibney was an important maker, and was issued the first Design Patent for a flatware design in this country. It was this
pattern - 'Patent 26' issued December 4, 1844 (see Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers 4th ed by Rainwater, p. 122).
This rare coin silver serving spoon is marked 'BALL, BLACK & CO/A'. It measures 7.25 inches long, weighs 1.45 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition.
