Irish Sterling ‘Celtic-point’ or ‘Star’ Pattern Soup Ladle by John or James Warner, Cork, c. 1795
This is a lovely ladle with bright-cut engraved sides extending up the handle to form an oval loop with an engraved crest of a profile of a rampant lion holding a crosslet fitchée. Above this armorial is an engraved star. Complimenting the pointed shape of the top and the oval shield is the plain, oval bowl with slightly pointed sides.
This wonderful Irish ladle is marked ‘I.W/ STERLING’. An identical example is pictured and identified in the newly published Cork Silver and Gold (fig. 82, p. 89). The ladle measures 13.75 inches long, weighs 5.75 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition with light wear to the highlights.
