English Sterling Coffee Pot by Hester Bateman, London, c. 1787/88
English Sterling Coffee Pot by Hester Bateman, London, c. 1787/88

This rare coffee pot is beautifully designed with a bulbous body and pedestal foot.  Cast and applied beading decorates the rims of the foot, lid and classic urn-shaped finial with a ball top.  The spout is ornamented with Bateman’s signature beading underneath, along the sides and top. One side of the pot is engraved with a crest of a stag head with antlers.  The opposite side is wonderfully engraved ‘RGL’ in a large foliate script within a garland.
Marks on English Sterling Coffee Pot by Hester Bateman, London, c. 1787/88

This elegant pot is fully marked underneath the upper rim of the body, measures 13 inches high and weighs 25.10 troy ounces.  It is in wonderful antique condition with a couple insignificant dings to the body. The original wooden handle has been restored.

An identical pot with a slightly different handle is pictured and described in Hester Bateman, Queen of English Silversmiths by David Shure, plate 3.
