Gorham ‘Lotus’ Sterling Pierced Large Sugar Sifter, c. 1870
Gorham’s ‘Lotus’ pattern is designed with Egyptian elements and 3 lotus leaves at the top of the handle. The oval bowl with lobed rim is wonderfully pierced to compliment the pattern. A nicely engraved ‘H’ monogram in the old English style is on the back.
Gorham’s ‘Lotus’ pattern was introduced in 1869 as part of the increasing interest in Egyptian objects known today as the ‘Egyptian Revival’. It is fairly rare and highly collected today. (For a detailed discussion of the pattern, see “American Silver Flatware in the Egyptian Revival Style, Part 1” by William P. Hood, et al. in the May/June 2003 edition of Silver Magazine.)
This rare serving piece is stamped on the back with Gorham’s trademark and ‘STERLING’. It measures 8.5 inches long, weighs 2.35 troy ounces and is in very good condition.
