S. Kirk & Son 11oz Hot Water Urn, c. 1850
S. Kirk & Son 11oz Hot Water Urn, c. 1850

This is a magnificent example of early Kirk repousse silver dating to c. 1850. The oval, urn shaped body is loosely decorated with flowing branches originating at the handles adorned with large leaves and blossoming flowers.  The stippled background adds to the depth and beauty of the design.  The ‘C’-scroll handles contain bold castings of acanthus leaves and the cast finial is a wonderful naturalistic  morning glory in bloom.  On one side of the body is an irregularly shaped cartouche which contains an ‘HM’ script monogram.  The spout also incorporates the ‘C’-scroll devices, adorned with foliate and bead castings. The pedestal base is also decorated with a ring of repousse flowers and foliage with a twisted rope motif at the base of the foot.

This outstanding piece is stamped underneath the body and on the original burner with ‘S.KIRK&SON/ 11.OZ’. It measures 16 inches high by 10 inches across the handles, weighs 71.15 troy ounces and is in excellent, crisp condition.
