Tiffany & Company 'Moderne' Sterling Silver Dish, c. 1950
Simplicity and grace characterize this wonderful sterling silver dish. Inspired by the modern movement, Tiffany's silversmiths made some spectacular silver during the mid
-20th century which was totally unadorned; relying on its form to create an object of beauty. The oval, shallow dish has raised ends with subtle curves; the base is a slightly
flaring ring. Designed in 1937, it features the strong low horizontal aesthetic popular during the 1930's. The center is engraved with a deco-styled 'G' initial.
Silver from this period is quite rare. Because of the depression and the ensuing world war, the market for luxury goods was very poor and very few items like this
were ever made. This lovely bowl shows the influence of Scandinavian modern design, and was most likely designed by Oscar Riedener. Riedener replaced Arthur Barney
(whose style is much more angular and 'deco') as Tiffany's lead silver designer in 1955.
The underside of this wonderful piece is marked 'TIFFANY & CO/ MAKERS/ STERLING SILVER/ 22416/M' (1947-56 date mark). It measures 12.25 inches wide by 7.75 inches
deep, weighs 23.15 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition.
