Tétard Frères French .950 Silver and Ivory Art Deco Covered Tureen on Stand, c. 1930

Tétard Frères French .950 Silver and Ivory Art Deco Covered Tureen on Stand, c. 1930

A stunning example of Art Deco silver from the 1930’s, this lovely octagonal tureen relies on bold lines and geometric shapes to create a work of art.  The domed lid is designed with canted corners, a stepped border and a horizontal ivory band incorporated into the finial.  The large body repeats this horizontal movement with paneled sides with a stepped foot.  This lovely tureen rests beautifully on its fitted stand.  Indicative of great Art Deco design is the way simple shapes and lines create movement and great presence, as does this large tureen.  An engraved deco-style ‘CD’ monogram is on one side of the cover.

Tétard Frères, along with Puiforcat and Christofle, was one of the leading makers of French Art Deco silver. With a long history of exceptional silversmithing which includes gold medals at 19th century world fairs, Maison Tétard began making silver in the style moderne during the 1920’s under the design leadership of Valéry Bizouard.  In 1930, Bizouard was joined by Jean Tétard.  Together, they are responsible for one of the finest bodies of French Art Deco designs.   We believe this piece was designed by Bizouard, but we can’t be certain.

This rare sterling silver server on stand is fully hallmarked with the company mark and Minerva head (French 1st standard mark).  The tureen measures 13.75 inches across the handles by 8.25 deep by 8.5 inches to the top of the finial.  The stand measures 21 inches long by 13.75 inches deep.  The total weight is an impressive 156.25 troy ounces.  The tureen and stand are in excellent condition.
