Ubaldo Vitali Sterling ‘Meadowlands Cup, Grade I’ Horse Racing Trophy, c. 1985
This is a very striking piece of contemporary silver made by one of the most respected silversmiths of our time. Designed as a large cylinder on a pedestal base, it is decorated with bold strap-work and rivets around the sides. The 3 handles are joined at the body with a heart at the top and a shield at the bottom. This piece rests on its wooden base with a removable sterling strap which reads:
THE MEADOWLANDS THE MEADOWLANDS CUP GRADE I PURSE - $500,000 OCTOBER 19, 1985 WON BY JACQUES D. WIMPFHEIMER’S BOUNDING BASQUE
Although technically a three handled cup trophy, this would certainly look nice with flowers or a bottle of champagne in it!
Mr. & Mrs. Wimpfheimer were well-known within the field of thoroughbred horse racing, having bred and raced horses for nearly 50 years. Mr Wimpfheimer was also president of A. Wimpfheimer & Company which operated the American Velvet Company.
Ubaldo Vitali is a 4th generation Italian silversmith who has been working in the United States since the late 1960’s. Considered one of the most competent and inspired artisans working today, his work can be found in many important collections. The Newark Museum commissioned him to create a tea and coffee service to celebrate their 80th birthday in 1989.
This wonderful trophy is marked underneath the base of the cup and on the strap of the pedestal ‘U. VITALE/ STERLING’. It measures 8 inches high by 8 inches across the handle and the pedestal adds another 3 inches in height. The cup is very heavy, weighing 61.30 troy ounces and is in excellent condition, retaining its original gilt interior.
