Gorham Antique Sterling Silver Champagne Pitcher, Providence, RI - 1886
This is an exceptionally rare object in a unique design. An unusual shaped cover is decorated with acid-etched engraving of foliate swirls. Attached to the hinge is a
thumb-piece very similar to Gorham's famous Louis XIV flatware pattern.
Two bands of large beading decorate the rim and neck of the body.
Some of the finest acid-etched engraving is exhibited on this pitcher including a knight's helmet with foliage emanating from it.
Within a large shield are bundled sacks around a chevron monogrammed 'KHH'. Adding beauty to this exotic piece is the remarkable handle.
A vine inspired handle is wrapped with another vine terminating at the top with stunning leaves and fruit.
We have never seen, let alone heard of, a 'champagne pitcher' until we stumbled upon this item in a Gorham catalog pictured along with a glass holder and bottle of
Pommery champagne. It is also pictured in Sterling Silver Holloware by Dorothy Rainwater.
This rare pitcher is marked with Gorham's trademark along with 'STERLING' and the date mark for 1886. It measures 13 inches high, weighs 38 troy ounces, retains
its original gilt interior and is in excellent antique condition.
