Attached at the side is a c-shaped reeded handle with acanthus leaf terminals.  Chased leaves decorate the spreading, pedestal foot and the underside of the top rim.  Ornamenting the body is boldly executed renaissance inspired strap-work with fine engraving.  Incorporated into this design are circular panels with the front bearing an engraved 'HS' monogram.

Spout detail of William Gale for Tiffany & Co Antique Sterling Silver Pitcher, c. 1850’s
William Gale was one of the great New York City silversmiths who created silver retailed by Tiffany & Co. before they made their own silver. Bearing the pattern number '35', which dates to 1852, this piece is one of the earliest examples of Tiffany holloware we have had the privilege to offer.  The use of the 550 Broadway address dates it to 1853-70, although it is most like from early in that period.

This striking antique pitcher is marked underneath 'TIFFANY & Co/ ENGLISH STERLING/ 925-1000/ 550 BROADWAY NY/ 35/ 7' and stamped twice 'G' for William Gale.  It measures 9.25 inches high, weighs an impressive 32.40 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition with very light wear to some highlights.
