This is a stunning pair of early sterling candlesticks with their original bobeches from Sheffield, England. Made two years after John Roberts registered his mark at the
Sheffield assayer's office, they are of beautiful quality and design. Classical acanthus and water-leaf foliage emanates upwards from the bases, shoulders and edges
of the bobeches while leaf and egg designs decorate the bottom shoulders, columns and sconces.
Engraved on the sconces and blank area of the bases are crests of a coronet with emanating ostrich plumes and a bird of prey. A great crest design - it is as if the bird has
made a nest of the crown and is protecting it with outstretched wings.
These wonderful candlesticks are fully hallmarked on the base and the bobeches are marked with the sovereign head, lion passant and maker's mark. They measure 12.75 inches
tall and are in excellent condition with very minor surface dings to the columns. New felt replacements cover original wooden insert undersides.
