This outstanding child's cup was made by Dominick & Haff in 1881. Wonderfully engaging, this cup features five children playing appropriate games in period clothes. On a spot hammered background these children are chased into the surface with deep intaglio chasing, in a style found only from Dominick & Haff's shop during the early 1880's. Chased between the playing children are the words "GIRLS AND BOYS." Underneath it bears the inscription: "Arthur George Renatus, May 17, 1882, From HB & ALB" It is also marked with Dominick & Haff's maker's mark for the year 1881 and the retailer's mark of Bigelow, Kennard & Co. from Boston. This cup measures 3.75 inches high, 2.75 inches in diameter and 4 inches wide across the handle. It weighs approximately 7 troy ounces and is in excellent condition except for a barely noticeable ding near the "L" in "GIRLS." A rare and wonderful find.
