Tiffany & Co. ‘Ailanthus’ Sterling Asparagus Fork, c. 1900
A very rare and intriguing pattern by Tiffany is ‘Ailanthus’. Unusual and exotic leaves on the front and back make up the design and shape of the handle. The wide, flat tines below a shell device make this object ideal for serving many dishes.
According to William P. Hood in Tiffany Silver Flatware, the ‘Ailanthus’ pattern is based on Ailanthus altissima, or the Chinese ‘Tree of Heaven’. He also states that: ‘Ailanthus is rarely available.’
This lovely server is marked on the back ‘PAT/ TIFFANY & CO/STERLING/1899’. It measures 9.75 inches long, weighs 4.70 troy ounces, has never been monogrammed and is in excellent condition.
