Gorham Aesthetic Movement Three-Dimensional ‘Lily of the Valley’ Sterling Salad Servers, c. 1870

Multiple deep die stampings of exceptional design and beauty make these servers works of art.  Detail of pattern of Gorham Three-Dimensional ‘Lily of the Valley’ Sterling Salad Servers, c. 1870The tops of the handles are three-dimensional cast leaves with applied lily-of-the valley above a classical element. The blades with light gilding and a matte finish, have wonderful foliage piercing and a hand-engraved border.  We’ve never had a set in this pattern before.

Clearly these were designed by George Wilkinson, Gorham’s inspired designer of the 1860’s & 70’s.  Born and trained inEngland, Wilkinson was one of finest ‘reform’ designers of the aesthetic movement to work in American silver.

These rare servers are marked on the back with Gorham’s trademark and ‘STERLING’.  They measure 10.75 inches long, weigh a combined 5.10 troy ounces and are in excellent condition.
