This lovely service consists of an ice cream serving spoon and 12 ice cream spoons in their original fitted box.
Multiple castings joined together form this wonderful and rare ice cream service.
The handles are hexagonal in shape and are joined to the blade and bowls with round reinforcements with fine bead decoration. The top parts of the handles have
flaring conical devices below a flat disc with a beaded edge. Reminiscent of the seal-top spoons, this unique design is beautifully engraved 'A.B.' on the top of the disc.
This lovely service is totally unmarked. Items in this pattern are rarely marked, however we have seen a couple pieces in this pattern
bearing Gorham's trademark. This service also comes in the original fitted box stamped 'GORHAM Co & BROWN/ SILVERSMITHS/ PROVIDENCE R.I'. According to Gorham Silver by
Charles Carpenter, 'Gorham, Co. & Brown, the predecessor to the present Tilden-Thurber, was founded in 1856 by John Gorham and Gorham Thurber with a man named Henry T. Brown.
Brown ran the store, which was an outlet for Gorham & Company silverwares, plus other luxury items' (pp.59-60). An original paper label on the bottom identifies the
set. The writing indicates the codes Gorham used and is titled 'OE Ice Cream Set Gilt'; the 'OE' abbreviation for Old English.
The ice cream spoons measure 6 inches long and are gilded on the fronts and backs of the bowls. The server measures 9.25 inches long and is gilded on the front of
the blade. The service weighs a total 11.95 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition with minor surface scratches from use. The original box has wear and the
leather hinge for the top has worn through.
