Peter, Ann and William Bateman Swing-Handled Sugar Bowl c. 1802
An exquisite sterling rimmed sugar bowl by the famous Bateman siblings, Peter, Ann and William dating to 1802. The sterling swing handle and rim are reeded in the classical style popular at the turn
of the 19th century. The rim is attached to a stunning anglo-irish blown and cut deep cobalt color glass bowl by means of six silver rivets. This 200 year old piece of glass is in super condition having
been stored in the original octagonal rosewood box.
The whole ensemble is in outstanding original condition except that we do not have the key. (Fortunately, it is not locked!) The extremely large size of this bowl (6.25") indicates the wealth of the
original owner. Such a large quantity of sugar, being an expensive condiment at that time, would imply their high social status. (As sugar is less expensive today, the key is no longer needed to keep
away the hands of prying servants!)
It is extremely rare to find sugar bowls of this type, and even rarer in such exceptional condition in the original box. Quite a prize for the collector!
