S. Kirk & Son 11oz Silver Chamber Candlestick, 1880-90

This chamber stick is quite an unusual example of Kirk silver.  The decoration, style and construction are quite intriguing.  Pan-form chamber sticks with handles first appear in the late 17th, early 18th century. In this example, the designers at Kirk adapt this model and give it a wonderful interpretation.  Both the shaped handle and socle are riveted to the main body.    The socle is designed with an open area in case the candle burns too low for easy removal. The hand-chased decoration, a series of decorative panels, circles, hearts, etc. is reminiscent of folk art.

This rare chamber stick is marked underneath with the mark used from 1880-90 'S. KIRK & Son./ 11 oz'. The 11oz marking was used in Baltimore to denote their equivalent of the sterling standard. This wonderful piece measures 10 inches long with the bowl being just under 5 inches in diameter.  It weighs 5.20 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition.
