Extremely Rare Gothic Revival Sterling Flagon by Peter Krider, Philadelphia - c. 1875
This example of Gothic Revival silver by Peter Krider from Philadelphia stands 15.5" tall and weighs approximately 50 troy ounces. Of bulbous form with a central chased band highlighted
by quatrefoils, a collar and base with floral decoration in the reform aesthetic of the 1870's and a lid highlighted by fleur-de-lis, this flagon represents a monumental effort by this important maker. This
item was retailed by George Webb in Baltimore before 1877 (see Jennifer Goldsborough, Maryland Silver In The Collection Of The Baltimore Museum Of Art, 1975, p. 198).
This is the only example of this form by Peter Krider we know. A similar, although significantly smaller flagon by Francis Cooper of New York is in the collection of the Carnegie Museum of Art in
Pittsburgh (see Charles Venable, Silver in America, fig. 3.13). Peter Krider made fine and fashionable silver for prominent Philadelphia jewelers such as JE Caldwell and Bailey & Company.
He also made important presentation, church and exposition silver; his work is represented in major public and private collections including that of Winterthur Museum.
