Pair of S. Kirk & Son Repousse 110z Silver Sauce Boats, 1868-90
It is uncommon to find a great pair of sauce boats. Floral and foliate repousse work against a stippled background, for which Kirk is so famous, decorate these wonderful examples.
Hanging from the front spout and back of the body are dramatic acanthus leaves executed for classical styling. Graceful handles are hand-engraved with a feather-edge
design. Another uncommon feature is the rectangular plinth bases decorated on their upper surfaces and contrast nicely with the plain column and bottom edge.
These lovely sterling sauce boats are marked underneath 'S. Kirk & Son/ 11OZ'. The 11oz mark was used to designate Baltimore's equivalent of the sterling standard. They
measure 8 inches long by 6 inches high by 4 inches wide, weigh a combined 16.10 troy ounces and are in very good antique condition.
