This unusual serving piece has a lovely shaped handle with hand-engraved decoration. The urn-shaped top is engraved with the initials 'BH'. The shallow, curved
blade is also engraved around the perimeter and shaped elements.
According to Catherine B. Hollan in "Silversmith, Watchmaking & Jeweler's Businesses in Washington, DC 1860-1899 Part III" (in Silver Magazine, Sept/Oct 1989),
Augustus Schmedtie had a business at 447 7th St., N. W. from 1865-67 and was later working as a partner in Schmedtie Brothers from 1878-96. We believe this is
from the earlier dates and is likely a retailer's mark.
The back of this coin silver server is stamped only by the retailer 'SHMEDTIE/ WASH. D. C'. It measures 9 inches long, weighs 1.35 troy ounces and is in good
antique condition with slight unevenness to the blade.
