Of tapering cylindrical form, this chocolate pot is a rare and fine example of Boston arts and crafts silver. Entirely hand raised, it features a molded band of drawn silver along the foot and rim and a hinged lid with cast urn form finial. The handle, with ivory insulators, is hand raised and applied. It measures 7.9 inches high, weighs approximately 16 troy ounces and is in excellent condition. It has never been monogrammed.
Originally from Finland, Leinonen became a central figure of the Boston arts and crafts movement. A leader of the Handicraft Shop in both Wellesley Hills and Boston, he acted as a mentor to other important smiths and was himself a very highly regarded artisan. In 1918, he won the "Medalist" award from the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts - one of only seven silversmiths to receive this prestigious award, the highest honor bestowed by the society.
Please see The Art that is Life by Wendy Kaplan, et al for a similar example in the collection of the Yale University Art Gallery. The form of this pot, its design, and Leinonen are discussed in detail on pp. 135-136.
