Exceptional Sterling Covered Entree Server with Warmer, Barbour Silver Company, Hartford, CT, c. 1895 from the Ames Family of North Easton, MA
This outstanding oval sterling covered entree server with ebony handles has a lid beautifully engraved with neoclassical decoration including foliate stringing and bellflower drops around the foliate pierced attachments which support the double baluster turned ebony handle. The oval upper basin is large and deep with turned ebony handles on the side attached with the same pierced foliate supports. The lower basin is less deep, for water to evenly dissipate the heat from the burner, its handles similar to the upper basin, but slightly closer to the body of the server. This is supported by a base with a conforming oval rim which is superbly pierced and engraved with repeating foliate cartouches in a neoclassical style. This base is supported by four vertical legs which are decorated with a pierced and engraved bellflower design which complments the cover. These legs are connected by a medial stretcher which is similarly pierced and engraved with scrolling foliate decoration and holds large burner with an ebony handle. It is engraved with the Ames family 'A' cypher under the handle of the lid.
Superbly beautiful, this server weighs a heavy 96 troy ounces. It measures 15.5 inches long over the handles and 10.5 inches high. It is in excellent condition.
