Tiffany & Co. 'Japanese' Sterling Silver Soup Ladle, 1871-75
The 'Japanese' pattern was first patented in the 1871 and shows American's growing interest in Japan and the exotic. It is a gorgeous pattern with a bird resting on a branch among flowers and other
branches on a matte background. The reverse of the handle is also decorated with Japonesque elements. The details and beauty of such an amazing design are
especially striking on large serving pieces like this. The deep, rectangular bowl has a soft gold wash on a matte finish and a ruffled edge.
This rare sterling silver ladle is stamped 'TIFFANY & CO/ STERLING/ PAT. 1871/ M'. This particular 'M' mark was used from 1869-1875 and because this pattern was
patented in 1871, one can specifically date the piece from 1871-75. It measures 12.5 inches long, weighs 7.60 troy ounces, has never been
monogrammed and is in very good/ excellent antique condition with very slight wear to the original gilding.
