Thomas Whartenby 'King's Hourglass' Coin Silver Dinner Forks, c. 1830-50 - set of 12
These forks are some of the rarest Philadelphia flatware we have come across. The classical fiddle-shaped handles decorated with lovely thread and beautiful shells are truly
elegant. An uncommon hourglass design enhances the
pattern which is repeated on the back of the handles with an extra bold shell above the tines. A 'JEG' script monogram is engraved on the front.
One of the forks is stamped 'WHARTENBY' and the other eleven are stamped 'THIBAULT'. According to American Silver at Winterthur by Ian Quimby, Thomas apprenticed
with Samuel Richards, Jr. from 1802-09 and by 1811 had his own shop in Philadelphia. One of his creditors were the jewelers Thibault & Brothers.
These stunning forks are exceptionally heavy having a total weight of 37 troy ounces. They measures 8 inches long and are in excellent antique condition.
