This rare serving instrument is a work of art. The naturalistically cast branch handle has a 2-prong curved fork at one end and a bowl at the other. This unique design is beautifully enhanced with applied various sea shells, seaweed, cattails and fish. Both ends are lightly gilded. Because it incorporated both a fork and spoon, this form was known as an ‘Ideal’ olive server!
Gorham’s ‘Narragansett’ pattern, made from entirely cast pieces, is a tour de force of American naturalistic design from the 1880’s.
This fascinating sterling silver server is marked with Gorham’s trademark and ‘STERLING/ 273’. The large shells are stamped with the model numbers ‘6825’ and ‘6827’. It measures 10.75 inches long, weighs 1.95 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
