American Coin Silver Nutmeg Grater, retailed by Haddock, Lincoln & Foss, Boston,  c. 1860

American Coin Silver Nutmeg Grater, retailed by Haddock, Lincoln & Foss, Boston, c. 1860

Examples of American coin silver nutmeg graters are quite rare.  This wonderful, cylindrical piece has a removable cover with an attached cylindrical steel grate.  The outside is decorated with bright-cut foliate engraving with a lovely ‘MAJ’ monogram.
Opened American Coin Silver Nutmeg Grater, retailed by Haddock, Lincoln & Foss, Boston, c. 1860

This wonderful coin silver nutmeg grater is only marked ‘Coin’ underneath.  Marks on the Mustard PotWe purchased this piece with the Haddock, Lincoln & Foss mustard pot (see full marks right) which has the same distinct ‘Coin’ mark.  They both have the same monogram, style of engraving and came from the same source.  The partnership of Haddock, Lincoln & Foss are generally considered retailers rather than makers.

These two pieces almost certainly come from the same condiment set, made by the same maker and sold by the same retailer.  This nutmeg grater would probably have been a ‘table’ nutmeg grater as opposed the the more common and smaller ‘personal’ graters which usually traveled with individuals.

Mark on the American Coin Silver Nutmeg Grater, retailed by Haddock, Lincoln & Foss, Boston, c. 1860This grater measures 3.5 inches long, is marked ‘Coin’ (see mark right) and is in very good antique condition with minor scratches to the cover.
